Policy, governance and responsible innovation.
We explore how digital justice systems and artificial intelligence can be designed, governed and implemented in ways that promote inclusion, accountability and public trust.

Inclusion Framework for Digital Justice (England and Wales)
Through her role on the Online Procedure Rule Committee, Dr Sarah Stephens contributes to discussions on how accessibility, inclusion and user-centred design can be embedded within digital justice reform.
This work has included supporting the development of approaches to inclusion within digital justice services and exploring how digital systems can better support people with diverse needs, capabilities and circumstances.
The aim is to help ensure that digital transformation improves access rather than creating new barriers.

Artificial Intelligence and Legal Aid in Tanzania
Smart Justice has contributed to national discussions exploring the governance of artificial intelligence in legal aid and access to justice services in Tanzania.
This work draws on practical experience developing justice technologies alongside research into legal empowerment, digital inclusion and access to justice.
Our contributions have included stakeholder engagement, conference presentations and policy discussions exploring how innovation can strengthen justice systems while maintaining appropriate safeguards.

East Africa Legal Tech and For Legal Aid and Access to Justice Symposium
Smart Justice supports conversations between policymakers, researchers, legal aid providers and technology practitioners to explore how innovation can strengthen justice systems while safeguarding rights and public confidence.
This initiative has helped connect research, practice and policy development across the region, contributing to emerging discussions on legal technology, digital justice and responsible innovation in East Africa.
